The Mad Sailors The Mad Sailors was a fish and chips restaurant, tapas bar & restaurant, fish & chips shop, and cafe located on Haji Lane. The restaurant celebrated the spirit of discovery from the old British seafarers by offering an eclectic concoction of ingredients and ideas influenced through voyage. Their small plates were perfect for sharing and embodied queer experimentation, making it an ideal spot for friends and family to explore new flavours together. Although The Mad Sailors couldn't promise fair weather, they were sure it was going to be one mad culinary ride. Unfortunately, this restaurant has been permanently closed.

In 2020, we DM’d a stranger in London. 
We told them their food was keeping us inspired. They wrote back warmly, and in that same message, we told them theirs would be the first restaurant we’d visit, whenever we next made it over. 
 
We meant it. Then, honestly, we forgot we’d said it. 
 
Years later, we walked into a restaurant in London, just because it looked good. Got chatting to the owner about the food. Mid-conversation: wait… haven’t we spoken before? 
 
It was them. The Great Chase. The exact same place. 
 
So this time, we’re not letting it end there. The Great Chase flew in from London & KL, three cities, one kitchen, cooking together.

"It's just fish and chips, how hard can it actually be?"

What they don't see is the quiet morning work. The hours before the doors open. Cutting bags of real potatoes into proper chips, slicing fresh fish fillets, and whisking batter from scratch so every plate hits the table crisp and hot.

Service is fast. The prep is long. The work doesn't stop, but doing it right is the only way we know how.

Five months since we reopened. Here’s what actually stuck with us.

The hype fades. The work doesn’t. The best teams don’t feel like work. Some lessons you have to relearn. And some people never really leave. Hafiz was on our crew back in 2017, and here he was again, checking the new menu.
