The name "Shikar" means "to hunt" in Hindi and was associated with the regals and royals of erstwhile India. While hunting is now forbidden and prohibited, the ethos of "Shikar" lives on at this restaurant. In the mid 18th & early 19th century, "Shikar" was associated not only with celebrations but also survival. The Rajput warriors often lived in the woods and had to replenish their vigour by eating what they hunted. At Shikar, guests can experience this minimalist diet for soldiers with simple ingredients, meats mostly roasted on an open fire or baked in a pit dug in earth.
However, dining at Shikar is far from minimalist. The grand old dining rooms at royal palaces were quite the spectacle with pomp and pageantry, and Shikar aims to recreate that atmosphere for its guests. One such dining room at the residence of the 6th Nizam of Hyderabad sat a hundred and one guests, and the menu offered animals and birds pictured on the walls to all their dignitaries. At Shikar, guests can enjoy a similarly spectacular dining experience.
